Why Do I Need a Professionally Captured Headshot?

In today’s “selfie” society, many choose to take their own headshot for professional or personal uses. So the question of why you should use a professional photographer for your headshot is one that must be answered.

First of all, the impact of a headshot (whether for social media or a corporate image) cannot be underestimated. This is quite often a professional first impression that sets the tone. Whether or not you are qualified and capable, and regardless of what your resume may say, the image you project to the world may imply a contradiction. For this very reason, it is in your best interest to use the services of a professional photographer who specializes in headshots.

Whether intended for a corporate intranet or personal social media use, the right photo speaks volumes. While you may like the selfie you have taken, you must ask yourself if it is portraying you the way you want others (co-workers, recruiters, or potential employers) to see you. While the photo of you sitting in your car may look just fine, it will not capture the attention of those who are looking for a professional to fill their corporate job openings.

The right photographer will take the time to get to know you, and what your expectations are of the image about to be taken. It is vital that your photographer is able to understand your personality, allowing it to show through your photos, and presenting you in the manner you feel is best.

Additionally, a photographer who specializes in headshots understands that while some photoshopping may be necessary, it cannot be overdone as to make you unrecognizable. Expecting the removal of wayward hairs or some fine lines is well within normal standards, but expecting the erasure of 20 or 30 pounds or 10 years is a bit extreme, and will only bring disappointment.

A professional photographer will have a thorough understanding of how best to use lighting and reflections to minimize shadows and accentuate features. He or she will select backdrops and gels to emphasize the outfit selected, and work with your natural coloring to produce a photo that is flattering and polished.

A professional photographer has studied his or her craft, and has honed it well. Given the enormity and importance placed upon your professional reputation, your headshot should be given equal weight.
